Vorwort
Turmmusiken haben eine jahrhundert lange Tradition in Deutschland.
Das sog. „Abblasen“ gehörte zum Dienst der Türmer und Stadtpfeifer. Man darf
sicher sein, dass der Brauch wesentlich älter ist als von Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts
her. Allerdings stammen die ältesten überlieferten Drucke von Turmmusiken erst
aus dem Jahre 1553. Es sind die „Choralbicinien“ von Johann Wannenmacher
(1485-1551). In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts flachte das Interesse an
Turmmusiken etwas ab. Anfang des vergangenen Jahrhunderts lebte die Tradition
wieder auf. 1914 wurde vom Balkon des Rathausturmes in Berlin herab geblasen.
Turmmusiken werden heute weiter gepflegt, z.B. ist es in Hamburg üblich, dass täglich
vom Turm der Michaelskirche herab geblasen wird. Bei der vorliegenden Komposition
kann die Pauke auch weggelassen werden.

(Tower-music) for 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and kettle-drums Preface Tower music, i.e.
music by brass ensembles playing from the top of a tower has a centuris-old tradition
in Germany. The so-called “abblasen”, the custom of announcing the hours, belong to
the duties of tower watchmen and waits. Consequently, one may be certain that this
tradition is much older than the middle of the 16th century. It is true that the first
printed editions of tower music were not published before 1553. They are so-called
“chorale bicinia” by Johann Wannenmacher (1485-1551). The interest in such music
dwindled during the second half of the 19th century. However, at the beginning of the
last century, the tradition came to life again. Music was played from the balcony of the
Berlin city hall in 1914. Tower music still is performed today, e.g. on a daily basis from
Hamburg’s famous St. Michael’s cathedral.

With the present composition kettle-drum can be left.
