Vorwort
Der Plan für eine Zusammenstellung internationaler Weihnachtslieder
entstand vor dem Hintergrund der anstehenden Europäischen
Währungsunion bereits 2001. Ein weiterer Gedanke war dabei auch
das Bedürfnis, einmal andere musikalische Äusserungen und Klangfarben
im Zusammenhang mit Weihnachten zu präsentieren.
Das so entstandene Medley „Christmas in Europe“ beinhaltet natürlich
keinen repräsentativen Querschnitt durch alle Europäischen Länder, weil
dies denn doch zu umfangreich wäre. Deshalb habe ich mich mehr auf den Reiz der
Unterschiedlichkeit konzentriert. Am Anfang stehen zwei Stücke aus Deutschland mit
unterschiedlichem Charakter – einmal aufmunternd, verkündend und zum zweiten
Erlösung verheissend. „Ecco Natale“ (nun ist es Weihnachten) aus Italien ist dagegen
eher folkloristisch , ebenso wie die spanisch / galizische Melodie „Pauxolina de Nadal“ mit
Ihrem exotisch anmutenden Couleur. Die folgenden Stücke aus Polen und Frankreich sind
wiederum sehr verschieden im Charakter – kanonisch und rhythmisch und im Gegensatz
dazu huldigend im Stil einer Hymne. Den Abschluss bildet schliesslich das fröhliche
„We wish you a merry Christmas“ aus England.
Zur Einstudierung noch folgende Bemerkung: Das Arrangement ist so gehalten, wie es nach
meinen Erfahrungen der realen Besetzungssituation in den meisten Blasorchestern entspricht.
Das heisst u.a. keine Oboe, Fagott, keine voller Horn bzw. Posaunensatz sowie keine Pauken.
Letzteres betreffend, empfehle ich die Verwendung von Tom Toms, die entsprechend gestimmt
werden sollten.

Preface
The plan of arranging international Christmas songs was born on the background of the agenda
of the European monetary union already in 2001. An additional idea of it was the desire of
presenting other musical comments and timbres in association to Christmas. The so-developed
Medley “Christmas in Europe” does of course not consist of a representative cross-section of all
European countries, because that would naturally be too extensive. That is why I concentraded
more on the attraction of their difference. --
In the beginning there are two pieces of Germany with different character—on the one hand
encouraging, prophesying and on the other hand preaching redemption. In contrast “Ecco Natale”
(It`s Christmas now) from Italy is more folkloric, as well as the Spanish/galizisch melody
“Pauxolina de Nadal” with their exotic striking colour. The following pieces from Poland and France
are also very different in character- canonical and rythmical and in contrast to that homaging in the
style of a hymn. The gay “We wish you a merry Christmas” from England concludes this medley.
After my own experience the arrangement is corresponding to the real situation of instrument
players in wind orchestras. That means among other things no oboe, basssoon, no complete
setting of horns or trombones as well as no kettledrums. Concerning the last instrument I
recommend the use of tom-toms that should be tuned appropriately.
